Vitamins for neurodivergent children: a pharmacist's guide

Supplements do not treat autism or ADHD, and any product that hints otherwise belongs back on the shelf. What a supplement can honestly do for a neurodivergent child is cover the nutritional gaps that a limited or sensory-selective diet leaves behind, and at Vegums that's exactly the job our pharmacists designed our kids gummies to do.

Key takeaways
  • No vitamin treats autism or ADHD. Be suspicious of anything that claims to.
  • Selective eating is very common in neurodivergent children, so nutrient gaps (vitamin D, B12, iodine, omega-3 DHA on plant-based diets) are a real, practical concern.
  • Format is everything for sensory-sensitive kids: one predictable fruit gummy a day often succeeds where tablets, sprays and hidden powders fail.
  • All Vegums kids gummies are suitable from age 3: one of each a day for under-12s, two of each a day from age 12.
  • The Kids Wellness Bundle covers all five essentials in one delivery, from £28.00 a month on subscription, or £35.00 one-time.

Can vitamins help autistic children or children with ADHD?

Here's the honest pharmacist answer: not in the way much of the internet suggests. There is no vitamin, mineral or omega-3 dose that treats the core features of autism or ADHD, and UK advertising rules quite rightly forbid supplement brands from claiming otherwise. If a brand promises "focus", "calm" or a change in your child's behaviour, walk away, whatever their packaging looks like.

What the evidence and everyday clinical experience do support is much more practical: many neurodivergent children eat a narrower range of foods than their peers, because texture, smell, colour and predictability matter enormously. The NHS notes that restricted or selective eating is common in autistic children. A narrow diet, whatever its cause, can leave real nutritional gaps, and those gaps are worth taking seriously in any child. That's the job a supplement can honestly do: it's a safety net under the diet you're working on, not a treatment.

Which nutrient gaps are most likely with selective eating?

Vitamin D: the NHS recommends it for all young children daily anyway, and it contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and the normal function of the immune system.

B12 and iodine: the classic gaps if meat, fish, eggs and dairy are off the menu, whether that's for family ethics or because of sensory preferences. B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism; iodine contributes to normal growth of children and normal cognitive function.

Omega-3 DHA: the usual dietary source is oily fish, which is one of the most commonly refused foods in any household, neurodivergent or not. DHA intake contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.

Vitamin C and general cover: if fruit and vegetables are limited to a beige-and-white palette, a broad A-to-Z formula can quietly backfill the basics while you keep offering the real thing.

One important flag before any supplement: if your child's diet is very restricted, or you're worried about growth or energy, talk to your GP, health visitor or a paediatric dietitian first. Some children benefit from blood tests before supplementing, and a professional can spot things a checklist can't.

What format works for a sensory-sensitive child?

Parents of neurodivergent children usually aren't asking "which nutrients?", they're asking "how on earth do I get anything in?". Format and predictability decide everything:

Format Sensory profile Predictability Honest verdict
Tablets / chewables Chalky texture, medicinal smell High Frequently refused; crushing into food breaks trust if discovered
Liquids / drops Taste varies dose to dose Low: measuring varies Easy to refuse, easy to forget, easily spat out
Sprays Unexpected sensation in the mouth Medium Some children find the sensation genuinely distressing
Hiding powder in food Changes the "safe food" None Risky: can put a trusted food on the refusal list for months
Gummies Consistent fruit taste and texture, every time High: same shape, same ritual Often the first format that sticks

The last row is why we hear from so many parents of neurodivergent kids. A gummy that is exactly the same every single day fits how many autistic children prefer to eat: same texture, same flavour, no surprises. It becomes part of the routine rather than a battle bolted onto it. And never underestimate the power of the same time, same place ritual: gummy with breakfast, tick the chart, done.

The simplest place to start: the Kids Wellness Bundle

Two young children at the breakfast table with Vegums kids gummy pouches: one of each a day under 12, two of each a day from 12, suitable from age 3

If the diet is narrow in more than one direction, the Kids Wellness Bundle is the tidiest answer: the five gummies that cover the gaps we see most, in one plastic-free letterbox delivery, so there's nothing to remember and nothing to reorder five separate times.

  • Kids A–Z Multivitamin: ten essential vitamins and minerals for broad daily cover
  • Kids Fish-Free Omega-3: DHA from algae, for the child who would sooner leave home than eat oily fish
  • Kids Super Iron: gentle ferric diphosphate, no nausea or constipation
  • Kids Wholefruit Probiotic: 1 billion CFU for digestion and immunity
  • Kids Wholefruit Vitamin C: real whole-fruit vitamin C, no added sugar

Suitable from age 3, one gummy of each a day for under-12s and two of each a day from age 12. Every product is pharmacist-formulated and Vegan Society certified. The bundle is from £28.00 a month on subscription, or £35.00 one-time, and you can pause or cancel a subscription whenever you like.

Prefer to start with just one?

That's often the sensible move with a sensory-sensitive child: introduce one flavour, let it become predictable, then add another. All our kids gummies are one a day from age 3, from £8.00 a month on subscription (£10 one-time).

  • Kids Multivitamin Gummy For Vegans: the six nutrients a plant-based or dairy-and-meat-avoiding child most commonly misses, including B12, D3 and iodine.
  • Kids Sugar-Free A-Z Multivitamin: 10 essentials including vitamins A and C with zero added sugar, useful for very beige diets, and the sensible pick if sugar is a concern.
  • Kids Fish-Free Omega-3 (from £9.00/mo, £11.25 one-time): DHA from algae for the child who would sooner leave home than eat oily fish.

Not sure which gap applies? Our pharmacists' complete checklist of what supplements plant-based families actually need walks through it, and you can email us at hi@vegums.com; a real pharmacist reads those.

Frequently asked questions

What age can children start taking Vegums kids gummies?

From age 3. Under 12, it's one gummy of each a day; from age 12, two of each a day. They're not suitable for children under 3, and gummies should always be given with supervision and stored out of reach.

Do vitamins help with ADHD focus or autistic meltdowns?

No supplement is a treatment for ADHD or autism, and we won't pretend otherwise. Supplements cover dietary gaps. For support with focus, sleep or distress, your GP, paediatrician or school SENCO are the right doors to knock on.

My child only eats about eight foods. Is a gummy enough?

A gummy can cover key vitamin and mineral gaps, but a very restricted diet deserves professional eyes. Ask your GP for a referral to a paediatric dietitian; a supplement can run alongside that support, not instead of it.

Are these gummies free from artificial colours and flavours?

Our kids gummies use real fruit flavours and natural colours. The full ingredient list is on every product page and every pack, because we'd rather you check than trust a slogan.

My child is on ADHD medication. Can they take a multivitamin?

Usually yes, but always check with your pharmacist or the prescriber first, mentioning every supplement your child takes. That's a two-minute conversation any community pharmacist will happily have.

What if my child fixates on the gummies and wants more than one?

Doses are set conservatively with exactly this in mind, but gummies should live out of sight and out of reach, and the one-a-day ritual itself (same time, same place) usually satisfies the routine-seeking instinct. If a stash raid happens, check with your pharmacist or GP.

Do you do a sugar-free option?

Yes, the Kids Sugar-Free A-Z has zero added sugar; it's sweetened with xylitol and stevia. Our standard kids gummies contain 0.7g of natural cane sugar each, about a fifth of a teaspoon.

Can adults with ADHD or autism take the kids gummies?

The kids doses are set for children; adults are better served by the adult range, which works the same way (same gummy every day, no surprises). From age 12, two kids gummies daily is the standard dose.
